The image of the dead Gatsby floating on a lilo in the
middle of his millionaire swimming pool is one of the most iconic in the world
of art and literature; it’s also a potent symbol of man as an island, aloof and
lonely in his own reality - in life and in death. And yet when glamour and tragedy combine, death has
almost an incandescent quality.
